To President Obama

Teens throughout Connecticut share their opinions about taking a personal financial management class in school:

"President Obama, personal finance should be taught in schools so that students have a basic understanding of how to manage their finances. Everyone will need to keep track and know what is going on with their money and understand how to do it at some point in their life."

"President Obama, personal financial management should be a required course in high school. It gives us (kids) the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the process of paying taxes, how banks work, and how to balance our checkbooks. I guarantee you that a generation that's well educated in how to manage their finances will be a more successful generation."

"President Obama, personal finance should be taught in schools because students should have a basic understanding of banking and how money is used and saved. Everyone will need to make financial decisions throughout their life so it is better for people to learn about earlier rather than later. Students would benefit from learning how to invest and build their money up when they are young."

"President Obama, our generation (teens) have become alarmingly ignorant about our personal financial situations. Whereas our parents' generation were forced to be more independent earlier in life, we have been 'babied' and have not had to pay bills or reconcile accounts yet....it is much more beneficial to students to learn from our mistakes now in a safe environment, rather than wait until our checks are all bounced and we are faced with fees and legal consequences that could have been avoided."

"President Obama, I think that personal finance should be taught in schools...when you are an adult you need to learn how to use your money properly and how the economics work and our school should help us with that."

"President Obama, these are important things to learn that will affect the rest of our lives if we understand how to do it, and if we don't understand how to manage our finances, we could suffer a lot as well."

"President Obama, every school should be required to teach personal finance, no matter which state, locality, or socio-economic community. Every American high school student should be required to pass an economic education class to graduate. This action could help us defend against another Great Recession."

"President Obama, it should be essential for all kids to take this class before they get out of high school."

"Mr. President, I strongly believe that you should make Personal Financial Management classes mandatory in all schools across America. The students need to know this information before they graduate, because it is very helpful for our future economics. Letting kids be taught this class helps their finances of the future, and will hopefully prevent another stock market crash."

"President Obama, kids today don't know how to manage their money. Some adults don't even know and they end up losing their house, or not being able to pay rent. Kids going into college should know how to manage their money before they leave high school."

"President Obama, the United States of America needs personal finance classes, we need to end poverty and we can do that by giving people knowledge about finance."

"President Obama, if students do not have any financial knowledge when they become adults, they will not survive in our world which mainly revolves around money and the economy."

"President Obama, why are you letting the people of this country get ripped off by the banks? You may not know you are, but by not making high schoolers take a personal finance course, you are stripping people of good knowledge to have. Therefore, you must make personal finance a required course to graduate high school."
